Friends of Rose Hill

Rose Hill is the burial location for many of our veterans, former Mayor Andronic Pappas, and a memorial for Hollywood icon Hedda Hopper (born Elda Furry). Many of Altoona's citizens have family and friends buried here. Until recently, much of the cemetery was in bad need of mowing. Knee-high grass and weeds would greet visitors to the cemetery, as well as fallen and broken headstones, dead trees and crumbling and deteriorating roads.

In 2017 the group Friends of Rose Hill Cemetery, a 501C 3, was formed to recruit volunteers that would be able to rectify the horrendous condition at Rose Hill.

Money to care for Rose Hill has been depleted since the perpetual care money that was paid years ago amounted to next to nothing.

The group established in 2017 has been successful in raising enough funds to keep the grass mowed and have been able to fund a major paving project, repaving the main road through the cemetery. The group is in desperate need of funding to continue the restoration and maintenance of Rose Hill Cemetery. Here are several ways you can help:

Ask friends and loved ones to consider making a memorial contribution in your memory to Friends of Rose Hill Cemetery.

While Rose Hill's problems will require a more permanent resolution and considerable donation of funds to guide us into the future, this group has made a major impact on the efforts to ensure that Rose Hill is restored to the place those resting there deserve.
